About the Cantufind [can't-you-find] Directory

The Cantufind Directory is the largest independent 'Family Safe Search Directory', and most comprehensive human-edited family safe search directory on the Web with a presence online since 2000. It is constructed and maintained by a large group of professional editors.

The Directories' place in the Organisation of the Web

It's true to say that even now the web continues to grow at staggering rates; with automated search engines increasingly unable to turn up useful results to search queries due to the large volume of sites joining the phenomenon, together with semantic manipulation of text it takes a small army of paid editorial staff to keep up the quality and comprehensiveness of the directories.  

Unlike volunteer run Directories, and many smaller directories who use paid staff 'Link rot' and multiple site linking is occuring as they can't keep pace with the changing growth of the Internet, or have less vested interest in maintaining the highest of standards as we do.
We decided to tackle the rapid expansion of the Internet by maintaining our paid editor ethos, for one simple reason, responsibility!   Huge respect is given to the armies of volunteers of open directories as many of them do a great job, but this is destroyed when quality is compromised due to abuse of privilege many editors are given.

We don't show bias, we show quality, we don't believe in giving 10,000 links plus to one site, and the same to another just to bloat our listing figures, we give one link per site, a few at the most, and that's only if there is good reason to do so.   

Instead of tackling the explosive growth of the Internet, Cantufind took the stance to organise the content into legible and applicable areas.  Why complicate the uncomplicated?   If a site sells eggs then it should logically be put in a category relevant to that such as 'Egg Seller'.   It's really as simple as that, we won't compromise quality for quantity as others do, if it means having less links then so be it, at least the links you'll find in Cantufind will be relevant to what your looking for.

The Definitive Catalogue of the Web?

We don't think we are yet, we don't think there is one, but that is our goal, we will be striving to compile the most relevant and purposeful catalogue of listings there ever has been; and as definitive as the oxford concise is on the English language, we aim to be on the internet content.

Just another Directory?

We don't think so!   Cantufind (Can't you find) was founded in direct challenge to the abuse of the so-called  'Open Source movement', and the claims to be 'Open' to all when truly its only open to who the volunteer editors want it to be!   We ran test after test over the years to get sites listed only to see after years many sites never got listed despite the high calibre of their content and the repeated submission of them.   Sure open source directories are free but that's of little consolation if they don't keep up to date and list quality sites when they happen.  We do, and if a site submits to us even after a week of opening, providing it is of the highest quality it will get accepted.

The price we have to pay!

There's a wide open debate about a paid directory and a free directory, so here's our line on this.   Unlike Open directories we do charge for a site to be reviewed, but this means that we can afford to be thorough with our reviews, our editors are paid to be thorough, and that's exactly what they are.    It also allows us to expedite listing quality sites, there's no prolonged wait for a listing, if your site is good it will get in, if its not it won't, its as simple as that.    Paying for a service is good in many ways, it puts a duty of care upon us, a duty to show vigilance and diligence.

We pride ourselves on being a 'Family safe directory', by this we mean that every one of the sites listed in our directory at the time of review was checked thoroughly for its content and the suitability for families.    We do however recognise that content can and often does change so we invite you to report any site you may think unsuitable to us where a dedicated team of trouble-shooters are on hand to look into this.   We have a dedicated Support system which allows you to report a link.   Be specific with your report, it will help us get the offending site down in the fastest time possible.  If we work together we can make this phenomenon called the internet a far safer place than it is.
